Dublin Birdwatching - Bull Island

Bull Island

Bull Island

Bull Island is an island located in north Dublin Bay. It is about 5km in length and 800m in width. It features a sandy beach called Dollymount Strand. The island is a part of the North Dublin Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a part of the North Bull Island Special Protection Area (SPA). It is also a bird sanctuary, a biosphere reserve, a natural nature reserve, and has a Special Amenity Area Order (SAAO), making it the site with the most designations in Ireland. The area is a car-free zone.

Mudflat areas are exposed during periods of low tides, which attracts many wildfowl and waders. Finches, warblers, buntings, pipits, and skylarks can be found at the Dollymount Strand dunes. Birds also include kestrels, merlins, and peregrine falcons.
